The Ukulele Sings Out: Music From the Big Island
Hawai`i's Grammy Award-winning slack key guitar and ukulele masters will bring original and classic island music to Puget Sound audiences at their only Northwest appearance this fall. The show starts at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, at University of Puget Sound's Schneebeck Concert Hall. Charles Brotman, Charlie Recaido, Brittni Paiva, and Keoki Kahumoku are renowned at home and abroad for music that has been distributed worldwide on radio, film, television, and as prize-winning CDs.
Brittni Paiva: At 21 years of age, Brittni Paiva is widely seen as the preeminent female ukulele player from Hawai`i. Affectionately referred to as the "ukulele darling," Brittni is a native of Hilo, on the Big Island. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Paiva has self-produced three award-winning CDs. She took home the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for "Most Promising Artist of the Year" in 2005 in support of her debut release Brittni x 3. Her next two releases, Hear and Brittni, each won "Ukulele Album of the Year" in the Hawai`i Music Awards. Paiva is well-known in global music circles

Presents:: The Ukulele Sings Out: Music From the Big Island Charles Michael Brotman, a native of Mercer Island, Wash., made history
in February 2005, when he won th...e first Grammy Award for a Hawaiian
music CD. He is known to audiences in Hawai`i, Japan, and on the
mainland for his guitar recordings, and is a multiple nominee and
winner of Hawai`i's Na Hoku Hanohano Award. His guitar recordings have
reached the top 10 on national radio charts in the "smooth jazz" and
"new age" categories, and in 2005 his Slack Key Guitar Vol 2.
debuted at number one on the Billboard World Chart. Brotman's
compositions have been used in film and on television shows, including Oprah, Dateline, and Entertainment Tonight.

Keoki Kahumoku is a four-time Hawaiian Grammy Award winner, and a
fifth generation master of one of the world's great acoustic guitar
traditions, Ki ho`alu. Touring year-round across the United States,
Tahiti, and Japan, he shares his renditions of... Hawaiian classics,
musical legacies of his family, and his own musical contributions to
Hawai`i's music. His catalog of recordings include three Grammy
Award-winning slack key guitar compilation albums, three Hawaiian
ukulele and slack key duet projects with ukulele master Herb Ohta Jr.,
and two solo releases, his latest called Rise and Shine.
The evening is presented by University of Puget Sound Cultural
Events. Tickets are $12 general admission and $4 for campus members.
